Chevrolet aims to triple yearly sales in India

Chevrolet India aims to almost triple annual sales to 300,000 vehicles by 2013 as India’s monetary progress and rising incomes boost demand. GM tactics to launch as many as six models, with two commercial vehicles, in India in the next two years, Karl Slym, leader of the Detroit-based company’s local unit, said at a press discussion in New Delhi recently.


A diesel-powered form of the Beat small vehicle will go on sale in a “few weeks,” he said. The automaker and its Shanghai-based partner SAIC Motor Corporation will begin advertising models in India this year similar to those already sold in China. GM entered the South Asian nation in 1994, tactics to boost its 5 percent market share with the new variety and challenge Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the country’s major cars maker. In India, 40 % of the overall sales of the market are in commercial vehicles, and we don’t sell in that market. That is a big, huge progress area.” India’s domestic car sales rose 29 percent from a year earlier to 148,681 vehicles in December, the group of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said this month. Total passenger-car shipments jumped 31 percent to 1.87 million very last year, according to the group. GM’s sales in India increase to 59 % in 2010 to 110,804, according to the company’s website.

Chevy Volt named North American Car of the Year


Electric? Hybrid? Series? Parallel? Who cares? The Chevrolet Volt, the very auto that helped us flee a soggy and cold Washington D.C. previous year, was now named North American Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show by an independent board of judges representing most important media outlets. It bested other finalists, the Hyundai Sonata and the Nissan Leaf. The Volt has won despite scoring low marks in the swimsuit section of the competition, but in its acceptance speech the Volt thanked all the little people and indicated it would spend the next 12 months working toward world peace and substitute drivetrain configurations for every one

2011 Chevrolet Aveo/Sonic Sedan and Hatchback

The Chevrolet Aveo, pretty long in the fang now desperately needs a facelift. The Aveo U-VA too is another large and practical hatchback that simply is struggling to find any takers in the Indian car market. Both these models lie at the very bottom of their respective segments, GM India has thus been unable to make any inroads in the B+ Hatchback and the C Segment car markets. In what could really change the fortunes of General Motors India, it’s parent, General Motors, today, at the 2011 Detroit Auto demonstrate unveiled both the sedan and the hatchback version of the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, which is set to replace the Aveo. On first glance, both the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic car and the Hatchback versions show a major stylistic upgrade. Gone are the plain jane vanilla looks to be changed by the butch edgy styling, which for some time now, has been GM’s latest styling philosophy.



Add to this, some fancy class leading interiors with some fine designed contemporary instrumentation, you have a contemporary sedan that is miles in front of the older Aveo. The Hatchback is to similar to vein looks butch and just like the sedan is a major departure from the now very dated U-VA. Though GM India is playing it’s cards near to the chest, we’re pretty sure about the Aveo/Sonic Sedan making it to Indian shores shortly if they have any hope of selling something at least. Coming to the all essential factor, the stuff beneath the hood. The 2012 Sonic is set to feature the highly acclaimed 1.4 Liter EcoTec turbo petrol that while being frugal, also manages to produce a class leading 138 Bhp of shove and 200 Nm of twist.


This brilliant engine and the superlative power-economy figures might not be what we Indians will get in the Indian 2012 Sonic/Aveo, but going by GM USA’s plan of pitching the Sonic Sedan straight at the 2011 Ford Fiesta Sedan by claiming more power and more economy as selling points, we’re still confident that the 1.4 Liter Ecotec Turbo Petrol, albeit in detuned guise, for will make it to Indian shores. We expect that the Indian version of the 2012 Aveo/Sonic Sedan gets a good common rail diesel motor in addition to petrol engine options. Apparently, the 2012 Sonic Hatchback’s Indian variant may feature both a petrol and diesel engine option. Now, if only the folks at GM India could carry in these wonderful looking cars to India quickly and at a price that is very reasonable at about INR 5-6 Lakhs and INR 8-10 Lakhs respectively.

Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback and Sedan Launched at Detroit!

General Motors has released details and images of the new Chevrolet Aveo that will be unwrapped later at Detroit, just that it is not called the Aveo, but Sonic. Like the car it replaces, the B-segment Sonic is available in 2 body styles – 5 door hatchback and 4 door sedan. Both variants deliver “class-leading rear-seat roominess and cargo space” according to General Motor. In the US, the subcompact Sonic takes on the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit. In America, the Sonic will come with relatively powerful engines for its size. The Ecotec 1400cc turbo (138 hp/200 Nm from 1,850 to 4,900 rpm) and the 135 hp/167 Nm Ecotec 1.8L are also found in big brother Cruze. Three transmissions are available: a 5 speed manual or 6 speed automatic with the 1800cc and a 6 speed manual for the sporty 1.4 turbo.

These modern powerplants come with features such as low-mass hollow-frame cast iron block, DOHC with VVT, chain-driven cams, roller-finger camshaft followers, piston-cooling oil jets and integrated oil cooler, variable-flow oil pump and electronically controlled thermostat. The 1.4′s turbocharger is integrated within the exhaust manifold for reduced weight and greater packaging flexibility. General Motor talks about “fun to drive” in the release, mentioning that Corvette engineers tuned the Sonic’s ride and handling. The hardware is par for the class – front MacPherson struts, back torsion beam, EPS steering, front disc brakes and back drums are expected.

The body structure is claimed to be among the stiffest in the segment. Sonic’s unique “flat top frame” cradle, for example, assures optimal stiffness in the front chassis portion, while he back axle is straight without contour for packaging restraints and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. Wheels are as big as 17" for the turbo model. The funky cabin’s highlight is the motorcycle inspired instrument panel, which combines analog with digital displays. The centre stack is typical modern General Motor; it and the steering wheel will be familiar to Cruze owners. Front “bucket seats” are standard and heated front seats are available along with remote start and sunroof. Connectivity includes OnStar, XM Satellite Radio, USB/Bluetooth and MyChevrolet mobile application. On the safety front, 10 standard air bags, Antilock Braking System, EBD, brake assist and OnStar with Automatic Crash Response are included. Production of the Sonic begins later this year in Michigan. General Motor says that Chevy is the only company building a small car in the US and Sonic will help restore about 1,000 jobs in the metropolitan Detroit area. This could be a big selling point for a US economy that is still facing issues with unemployment.

Chevrolet launches Sonic hatchback

Chevrolet Sonic hatchback, the next generation Aveo finally landed in North America. Our habitual readers must be remembering our previous article on this topic. But there is a minor difference, as per newest information from Chevrolet officials, Aveo’s rechristening will be applicable to some chosen markets like North America and Mexico only. That official words tell us, if new generation Aveo hits Indian market, it will carry on with Chevrolet Aveo badge. Chevrolet’s this B-Segment offering was debuted in Paris Motor Show as Aveo and later undergone a renaming exercise and finally named as Chevrolet Sonic for some selected markets as we said before. “The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name,” said Chris Perry,



Chevrolet’s vice president of US marketing. “The new car is roomy, stylish and enjoyable to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about,” he added. Other details like engine and transmission and price are still awaited. But speculated engines are a pair of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The engine series will have two 1.2-liter versions – a 70 hp version and an 86 hp variant. Later a 1.4-liter unit with 100 horsepower and a 1.6-liter version with 115 horsepower may join the before said engines . There could also be two other versions featuring 1.3-liter diesel engines – one with 75 horsepower and one with 95 horsepower – featuring Start/Stop technology. Chevrolet Sonic may feature both manual and auto transmissions.

Chevrolet announced today that its all-new, U.S. built small car will be called the Chevrolet Sonic in North America. “The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet U.S. Marketing. “The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about.” The small car will carry the Sonic name in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Production of the Sonic begins in 2011 at GM’s Orion Assembly Center in Michigan, which received a $545-million investment in upgrades and retooling, and will help restore approximately 1,000 jobs in the metropolitan Detroit area.


The vehicle will continue to be called Aveo in other parts of the world, where it will be sold in more than 50 countries. Back to India, our Aveo U-VA hatchback could be the worst performer in Chevrolet India’s portfolio. Though U-VA is a value for money car it’s dull styling and a slightly under powered engine damages it’s impression among our hatchback buyers. We think Chevrolet India must consider bringing  2011 Aveo/Sonic to India and position it in our premium hatchback segment. If it happens, we are sure new Chevrolet Aveo can easily snatch some market shares of Hyundai i20, Skoda Fabia and VW Polo within no time. Let us see what’s Chevrolet India’s plans for year 2011.

GM India’s Halol Plant Won Safety Award

General Motors India has won the Gujarat State Safety Awards 2010, for the various safety initiatives and programmes undertaken by the company at its manufacturing facility at Halol. This is the 3rd repeated win in a row that General Motors India won the award. The Chevrolet India Halol plant has been selected for its finest safety systems under the categories of ‘The Winner Rotating Shield’ & ‘Achievement of lowest Disabling Injury Index.

Commenting on the commendable achievement, P Balendran, vice president, General Motor India said, “The awards conferred on us for the 3rd time in a row is a testimony for administering best industrial and safety practices at our manufacturing units and will also motivate us to further improve the existing benchmarks. We have maintained a continued focus on encouraging accident prevention and implementing safety procedures across all our processes and management”

Camaro Back In The Race

A sad news for all the Ford Mustang lovers. For the first time since 1985, Chevrolet Camaro gains the numero uno spot ahead of Ford Mustang with respect to the sales of these muscle cars. Even though, a year ago GM filed for bankruptcy, Camaro’s sales have boosted GM’s confidence. According to the news, Ford has sold 68,264 Mustangs through November whereas 75,685 Camaros were sold by Chevy. Ford has constantly kept the Mustang in people’s interest by introducing hottest and better than before Mustangs with a series of great modifications and new engines. Mustang lovers can still not lose hope as the figures do not matter for them. It is the sting of the  Mustang that sets it apart from the rest. Here we have a look at how these two machines go head to head.



Both the muscle cars have a cool retro look. The Mustang has a better fuel economy and a great looking interior. Camaro has a slight advantage with respect to the exterior. The Ford Mustang ranges from $20,995 to $35,995 in price, with the Camaro ranging from $22,680 to $33,745. The Camaro blows out 304 to 426 horsepower whereas the Mustang will stop your beats producing  305 to 412 horsepower. The statistics show that these two vehicles are very similar. But, the Mustang is slightly ahead in the race when it comes to overall features.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze: The safest vehicle for your family
