HM-Mitsubishi may launch Evo X in India in 2010

According to some hard-to-believe reports in the media, HM-Mitsubishi is planning to launch the latest iteration of the legendary Evo - the Evo X - in the Indian market in 2010. The company is expected to display the Evo X at the Auto Expo in Delhi in January 2010 and launch the car in India subsequently.

Unlike the Mitsubishi products currently on sale in India (most of which are completely outdated and offer underwhelming performance at an overwhelming price!), the Evo X is the real deal. It's fitted with a 2.0-litre engine that produces around 280 horsepower, which allows the car to accelerate from zero to 100km/h in less than five seconds!

Indeed, the Mitsubishi Evo is one of those rare four-door saloons that offer near-supercar levels of handling and performance and that can't possibly come cheap. Which is why Mitsubishi, during 2010, will aim for sales of 100 units or less for the Evo X. The car could be priced at Rs 30 lakh or more, which would certainly make it a very niche product - strictly for the wealthy enthusiast only.

Hong Kong police to use Mitsubishi i-MiEV

Taking its cues from Japan, where the Police already use electric patrol cars, Hong Kong also plans to start using battery-powered patrol cars for its Police. By the end of this year, Hong Kong is expected to get its first batch of 10 Mitsubishi i-MiEV cars, three of which will be used by its Police force.

Powered by lithium-ion batteries, the i-MiEV has a range of 160km on a full charge and a top speed of 130km/h. A full charge, however, takes as much as eight hours, which means these EVs cannot entirely replace the entire Police fleet in Hong Kong or indeed any other country.

Mitsubishi Lancer to be facelifted soon in Malaysia

A new facelift for the Mitsubishi Lancer is scheduled to be released sometime this week and as a teaser, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia have posted a teaser image on the frontpage of their website. The teaser reveals the new Lancer through a moving shroud but I've managed to piece together the whole car so you can have a clearer view.

The Lancer has a new front end with a cleaner front bumper, somewhat like the cleaner look that the Lancer Evolution's bumper has. If you think it looks familiar, it's basically the same bumper that can be found on the 5-door Lancer Sportback.

The original Lancer bumper put more prominence on the bumper area that flows between the upper grille and lower grille. Given that so many people just loves to paint the center piece black to emulate the Evolution's style, Mitsubishi seems to have done this for them from the factory. The look is complete with a trim piece surrounding the grille as a whole, top to bottom.

Mitsubishi to Hike Car Prices in India

All Mitsubishi cars in India will get expensive from April 1. The company plans to hike the prices of its models by up to 4-5 percent. "In the last year and a half, the yen has appreciated 40 per cent against the rupee.

This, combined with the appreciation of the US dollar, has come as a double whammy for us," Mr Y.V.S. Vijay Kumar, Executive Vice- President, Hindustan Motors. The escalating yen has resulted in the imported kits to get expensive.

Moreover, it is not possible to incorporate localized content in Mitsubishi models which means that there is a great forex outflow for both imported and assembled cars. Mitsubishi has a joint venture with Hindustan Motors in India and has an assembly unit in Chennai.

The company's high end sports-utility vehicles (SUVs) Outlander and Pajero which are priced at Rs. 21-22 lakh will become costlier by Rs.1 lakh. The high-end Montero SUV, which is imported as a CBU and sports a price tag of Rs. 42 lakh, could see a steeper hike because duty levies are higher.

Furthermore, Mitsubishi's midsize sedans -Cedia with a price tag of Rs.10.29 lakh and Lancer with a price tag of Rs 8.20 lakh will become costlier by Rs.50,000 and Rs.40,000 respectively.

Hyundai & Mitsubishi vehicles cheaper

The Indian government's recent decision to implement a 4% reduction in central value added tax (CenVAT) seems to be working in favour of car buyers, since most companies are choosing to pass on the benefit to consumers. Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL), for example, has revised prices across its entire range, except for the Tucson SUV, which is imported into India as a CBU.

Prices have been reduced by Rs 11,000 for the Hyundai Santro GL, Rs 12,500 for the Santro GLS LPG, Rs 14,400 for the i10 Sportz, Rs 13,400 for the Getz GLE 1.1, Rs 15,200 for the Getz GLX 1.3, Rs 19,400 for the Getz CRDi, Rs 15,500 for the Accent, Rs 19,600 for the Verna, Rs 26,000 for the Verna CRDi and a massive Rs 45,000 for the Sonata CTDi Automatic.

Hindustan Motors has also acted quickly, and announced reduced prices for all its Mitsubishi cars. Prices have been reduced by Rs 25,000 for the Lancer LXd, Rs 30,000 for the Cedia, Rs 65,000 for the Pajero and Outlander and Rs 1.20 lakh for the Montero.
