GM, VW aim to boost sales in China to two million units
According to a Reuters report, General Motors Corp. is aiming to double its car sales in China by 2013. The company, which currently sells around one million vehicles in China every year, plans to launch as many as 30 new and/or upgraded vehicles in that country over the next five years, which, it hopes, will boost sales to two million units per annum.
Volkswagen - GM's primary rival in the Chinese car market - is also looking at doubling its sales in China to two million units per annum. However, unlike GM, which hopes to get to that figure by 2013, VW is aiming to hit the two million mark only by 2018. While GM is facing the prospect of bankruptcy in the US, its overseas operations - including India and China - will largely remain unaffected, at least in the short- to medium-term.
