Maruti Suzuki to Expand its Diesel Portfolio
The Indian car leader Maruti Suzuki is planning to introduce the diesel versions of other models. Currently the Swift diesel and DZire diesel variants shine on the Indian roads and this success inspired the car manufacturer to launch more diesel models.
According to S Nakanishi (MSI Managing Director, Maruti Suzuki India), "There is a good demand for diesel cars in the Indian market, and we are looking at the possibility of introducing more diesel engine options. But, we face some capacity constraints for expansion."
Maruti Suzuki Ritz which is expected to launch next month will be seen with a diesel variant powered by a 1.3-litre engine. And there is also possibility of SX4 diesel coming to Indian market.
Commenting on the diesel cars, an MSI official said, "Diesel cars are becoming very popular as they are more fuel-efficient and cheaper to run. Both our Swift and DZire diesel variants outstrip the sales of their petrol siblings. We, currently, don't manufacture any diesel engines other than the 1.3-litre multi-jet and sourcing a new engine may take some time."
The diesel versions of SX4 sedan and Grant Vitara SUV are already present overseas and are yet to enter the Indian market. The experts comment on Maruti's expansion of its diesel portfolio that the car manufacturer is is setting itself ready against its rival Hyundai who is planning to introduce the diesel variants of its small cars i10 and i20 very soon on the Indian roads.
