Tata Motors to set up permanent production base for Nano at Pantnagar

After the Singur debacle, Tata Motors has had to decide to launch the Nano from its Pantnagar facility. But while it was earlier being thought that the Pantnagar, Uttarakhand facility would only be an interim solution for the Nano, things seem to have turned out otherwise. Tata Motors is now considering setting up a permanent manufacturing unit for the Nano at Pantnagar.

While the mother plant for the Nano will certainly be set up at Sanand, in Gujarat, Nano production has already started in Pantnagar, where Tata Motors also manufactures the Ace mini truck. And even after the plant at Sanand becomes operational - something that may be one year away from now - the company will continue to manufacture the Nano at Pantnagar.

While the Sanand plant will produce 250,000 units of the Nano per year (expandable to 500,000 units, depending on demand), the Pantnagar facility will produce cars on a smaller scale. When the Nano is launched in December this year, the Pantnagar factory will be assembling about 4,000 units of the car per month, with the engines and gearboxes coming from Tata's plant in Pimpri, near Pune.
