Volkswagen Golf named 2009 World Car of the Year

The Volkswagen Golf has been awarded the 2009 World Car of the Year award by a jury comprised of 59 international automotive journalists from twenty-five countries around the world. The award was announced yesterday at a news conference during the New York International Auto Show.

Since the first VW Golf was launched in 1974, Volkswagen has sold more than 26 million units in 120 countries, making it one of the top selling vehicles of all-time. The latest, sixth-generation Golf made its debut at the Paris Motor Show last year and will be coming to India by the end of this year. In India, the Golf will be manufactured at VW's new plant at Chakan, near Pune, and will be available in petrol and diesel variants.
