Hero Honda and HMSI tighten grip

The ongoing economic recession is affecting manufacturing output and sales of industries across the globe. However, closer home the wings of a global auto giant are spreading over the Indian two-wheeler market. To make matters worse for others, we suspect the wings are being aided by it's Indian subsidiary.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) along with its Indian JV partner Hero Honda have achieved a cumulative market stronghold of 73% in January 2009. Hero Honda, India's numero-uno two-wheeler manufacturer has further strengthened it's market position by selling 3,11,030 units in January. Meanwhile, HMSI has retained it's title of being the second largest Indian two-wheeler maker by achieving a sales figure of 90,842 units.

Hero Honda's sales figure for the month of Jan comprises mainly of motorcycle sales . Honda has managed to be the top manufacturer of scooters since the past seven years. We suspect HMSI and Hero Honda are trying to increase their share over the Indian two-wheeler market by having completely separate product portfolio.

Honda will be launching it's CBR 1000RR around May to increase it's appeal in the niche superbike market. It's recently launched CBF Stunner 125cc bike is still selling like hot cakes. The brand value of Hero Honda always appeals to customers even in trying times and the entry level bikes have been best sellers.
